What is the purpose of the "hop number" in packet switching?

To indicate the total number of hops the packet has taken.

To ensure that packets are delivered in the correct order.

To prevent packets from circulating endlessly in a network.

The hop number limits the lifespan of a packet. If a packet reaches a hop number of zero, it's discarded.
